Apart from plants, this exploratory machine also carries silkworm eggs. The Telegraph reports, the idea of ​​bringing living things to the Moon is to know the system of adaptation and cycles of beings.

Plants will support silkworms with oxygen, and in turn they will help provide food for silkworms.

“Why potatoes and Arabidopsis? Because the period of Arabidopsis growth is short and comfortable to observe. And potatoes can be the main food source for space travelers in the future,” said Liu Hanlong, Experimental Director and Vice-president of Chongqing University.

“Our experiment might help gather knowledge to build the Moon base and long-term shelter on the Moon,” he said.

In this experiment, the researchers will carefully observe the plants to see whether they succeed in photosynthesis or not.

In addition, scientists want to know whether the plant can grow and develop in the environment of the Moon.

“We want to study seed respiration and photosynthesis on the Moon,” said Xie Gengxin, Head of Experimental Designers at Xinhua.

This “biosphere” experiment is a collaboration between 28 Chinese universities, led by Chongqing University.

This experiment was carried out on an aluminum cylinder with a capacity of 1.4 liters (0.8 liters), and weighed about 3 kilograms.

The weight consists of fertilizer, nutrients, and water. Sunlight enters the container through a “tube,” and a small camera is used to observe the environment.

The data will return to Earth through a relay system that China has prepared.

Previously, Arabidopsis had grown in space, including in an experiment on the International Space Station that showed plant leaves appear to rise and fall when they detect the moon’s gravity.

However, questions still arise regarding the flower and fertility of the plant while living on the Moon.
